Staying Accountable and Tracking Progress

00:00 It’s easy to make progress on those days that you’re motivated, but it’s equally important to show up when your motivation fades. On those days when you don’t feel like studying, it makes it easier to show up when you have accountability.

00:13 One way to keep yourself accountable is by making your goals public. It could be by sharing your roadmap with your study partner or by posting your goals in the Real Python Community. It doesn’t have to be a big announcement.

00:27 Even a simple, hey, this is what I’ll be learning this month, is enough. Knowing someone will ask about your progress makes it surprisingly easier to show up on the days that you don’t feel like it.

00:39 Something else that helps when you’re unmotivated is reviewing how far you’ve come, not just how far you have to go. At the end of each month, you could revisit your roadmap worksheet and update your skill ratings.

00:52 This monthly check-in has two purposes. On one hand, it shows you the ground you’ve covered, which is motivating, and on the other hand, it also keeps your plan aligned because your goals will shift as you grow.

01:06 Don’t wait for big milestones to count something as a win. Finishing a tutorial counts, fixing a bug you’ve been stuck on for hours counts, and finally understanding a concept that you were confused about all of last week also counts.

01:20 It’s those small wins that build momentum, and it’s momentum what carries you through the days you don’t feel like showing up. In the next lesson, you’ll learn how to adapt your routine as you grow.
