The Best Programming Fonts for Python

00:01 Hey! This is a bonus video where I’m showing you three of my favorite programming fonts. I’ll give you a quick demo of what they look like and show you where you can find them on the internet, where you can download them so you can try them out.

00:15 All of these three fonts are available for free, so you don’t have to pay anything. You can just download them and try them out. They work on all platforms, so you’re going to be able to use the same font or the same fonts on Windows, Mac, and Linux, if you want, which I think is nice because if you’re switching platforms a lot, it really helps to make things look the same I think. So, the first font I want to show you—and I’ve already set this up here—is Ubuntu Mono.

00:48 The font comes from Ubuntu Linux and this is kind of the default font that you find there for programming. And I absolutely love this font. So this is the main font I’m using, day in and out, because I really like how readable it is and it just looks really nice and I find it really legible. So, this is kind of my go-to font, I highly recommend this font. If you want to install Ubuntu Mono, then probably the best way to do that is to just Google for Ubuntu Mono font.

01:28 Then you’re going to be able to download the font files there from font.ubuntu.com. And you just want to click that link to download the font files, install them as I explained to you in the book, and then you’re pretty much all set.

01:41 The only thing you need to do is go into your Sublime Text settings and find the "font_face" setting in your user settings, and then set that to "Ubuntu Mono" and you can start using Ubuntu Mono.

01:55 Okay, so the next font I want to show you is called Luxi Mono. And that one is a lot different compared to Ubuntu Mono, but I really, really like this font too. Actually, I’ve been using this over Ubuntu Mono for the last couple of months.

02:12 I’m still using Ubuntu Mono in my terminal, but for writing code, I actually really like this typewriter feel. And with this font, there seems to be, like, a sweet spot for the font size.

02:26 For me, I think that’s around 16 or 15, where I feel like it’s really crisp and it’s just really, really legible, and I really enjoy working with this font.

02:37 So if you’re interested in trying out Luxi Mono, I highly recommend that font. You can find it, again, by searching for it on Google. You just want to punch in Luxi Mono.

02:50 And then probably the easiest is to just go through that Font Squirrel link, where you can download the Luxi Mono font and just install it and then configure it in your Sublime Text settings. And yeah, I really like this font.

03:07 I think it’s awesome for writing code or also doing any kind of text writing. I really enjoy this font. I really like the way it looks and I really like the way it reads, so be sure to try that out. Cool!

03:18 The last font I want to show you is called Source Code Pro by Adobe. And, again, it has a bit of a different feel to it. It’s more similar to Ubuntu Mono than it is to Luxi Mono.

03:35 It has a very clean and sort of thin clear-cut feel to it, and I really like that too. It feels a little bit different than Ubuntu Mono. Like, it’s less chunky, so I still prefer Ubuntu Mono compared to Source Code Pro, but it’s a great font. I think it’s very readable as well.

03:55 The spacing seems to be a little bit different here, but definitely another font I could highly recommend. And you can use that on all platforms, so you’re going to be able to use the same font everywhere you work. And again, to find that font,

04:11 I’m just going to search for Source Code Pro.

04:14 And this one is surprisingly a little bit difficult to download. I’ve been clicking around until I found a proper download link. So you want to go to the GitHub repo for a Source Code Pro and then click on Releases and then just pick the download link here, Source code (zip), and that will have the font files and you can just punch in "Source Code Pro" into the "font_face" setting in your Sublime Text users settings, and then you’re good to go!

04:46 Once you have installed all of these fonts, of course, you can just switch between them by changing the setting. You don’t have to re-download or anything, so that makes it kind of convenient.

04:56 All right! These were my three favorite programming fonts that I use in Sublime Text and also my in terminal. I highly recommend these three. They’re available for free, so you can just try them out and then pick one that you really like and that you enjoy. Because if you’re looking at this thing all day, then you might as well pick a font that you really enjoy and that’s easy to read and that’s enjoyable and that just makes you a little bit happier as a programmer!

05:23 Because I feel like that’s really important—having a good setup and one that works for you and one that you enjoy. I think that’s really important. All right, good luck with picking your perfect font and finding that, and then setting it up and working with it! Thank you.
