The realpython.com tutorial team is known for making the highest-quality Python tutorials available online. Our mission is to help Python developers around the world become more awesome.

With a reach of over 2,000,000 visitors a month, it feels amazing how far we’ve come—but we think we can do even better!

To help us raise the quality level of our tutorials even further, and expand beyond the topics we’ve covered so far, we are growing our team.

We are looking for a great Tutorial Editor to join our team. Keep reading to find out what’s involved and how you can apply.

Why Join Our Team?

  1. Learning: You’ll always be learning something new—and you’ll have fun doing it. You’ll become a better editor, writer, and communicator while making new friends along the way.

  2. Eyeballs: Our site gets a lot of traffic—two million visitors per month and growing. We’re regularly featured in other Python publications and we also run one of the largest newsletters and social media accounts in the community. When you contribute to a tutorial here, it will get read a lot, and people will love you for it.

  3. Personal Exposure: We believe in giving credit where credit is due. Your picture and bio will be featured on each piece you work on and on our team roster page.

  4. $$$ Money: We’re not asking you to do this “just for the exposure”—to be clear, this is a paid part-time position.

  5. Special Opportunities: Members of the tutorial team get access to special opportunities such as contributing to our books and courses, speaking at online meetups we organize, becoming interview guests to chat about an area of your expertise, working on team projects, and more.

  6. You’ll Have an Impact: We get emails and comments every day about how our tutorials help our readers write their first Python program, get their learning progress unstuck, or accomplish their career dream of working with Python professionally. This means a lot to us and makes all the hard work worth it. Our most prolific contributors have been approached at conferences and meetups by other developers who read their articles—a great conversation starter.

  7. 100% Remote-Friendly: At Real Python you’ll join a remote-first, distributed, and diverse team that spans across the globe.

  8. Free Stuff: As a final bonus, by joining the tutorial team you will get a lot of free stuff. You’ll get a free copy of all of the products we sell on the site, as well as a life-time membership to PythonistaCafe. That’s about $1,000 in value you’ll receive for free.

Requirements & How To Apply

As a Tutorial Editor on the RP Team you’ll put the finishing touches on our written tutorials and articles so we publish helpful, beautiful, and watertight pieces of technical writing that our readers will love.

After structural and technical feedback has been resolved, you’ll perform a final editing and proofreading pass to fix any remaining typos, grammatical issues, and formatting problems.

In this final editing phase you’ll focus on tone, clarity, and formatting (as well as adherence to the style guide) so you can deliver on our high quality standards and guarantee consistency for our students.

You’ll also be responsible for setting up the article on the realpython.com website using our custom content management system. This requires an eye for clear layouts and presenting information on the web in a way that is fun and accessible.

In summary, we’re looking for a freelance Tutorial Editor with a passion for editing and an interest in Python who has:

  1. A detailed grasp of the nuts-and-bolts mechanics of written English
  2. An instinct for how to analyze text in order to rearrange it in a way that is clearer, both conceptually and visually
  3. Precision of thought to address potential ambiguities and misunderstandings in our articles
  4. An ear for tone
  5. An average of about 15 hours a week to edit articles and communicate with the rest of the team
  6. Basic technical knowledge of HTML and web publishing. Experience with using Markdown, and online collaboration tools like GitHub, Trello, and Slack is a plus

You’ll work closely with our Executive Editor in this role and we will train you on the technical details and the specifics of our publishing process—so don’t feel like you have to be a rockstar programmer or blogger to apply for this role.

We’re looking for a long-term collaboration with someone who’s eager to learn and grow, and comfortable using modern communication tools on our 100% remote-first team.
