Locating Your Working Directory - macOS Terminal
00:00
Now that you’re in the terminal, there is this little ~
sign, but where are we? When it opens up, I think you usually start in your home folder.
00:10
You can see which folder are you in by typing pwd
, which stands for print working directory. And you can see that I am starting off in /Users/martin/
.
00:21 This is my personal folder, home folder. Okay, so depending on our viewer’s name, there might be a different name there, or the name of your computer that you’re using.
00:32 And I think the first really important thing to understand is basically you can think of it like you are navigating the Finder on macOS, that you are at some position in your system where you can click around and stuff like that. But with the terminal, you don’t click around.
00:46
You use your keyboard to navigate. And now with pwd
, you showed what’s our current position. And that’s always good. It’s one of these commands that you can run often when you do something because it’s helpful to know where you are when you want to navigate or do something.
01:02 That’s true. I think it’s always helpful to know where you are in life, on vacation.
