Agents That Keep Working When You Leave

Most chat conversations stop when you stop typing. Some AI work keeps going after you walk away, and it keeps using your usage limit while it runs. It can also keep acting in your apps, like sending messages or changing files.

What Keeps Running

Two kinds of work carry on without you, and both usually run in the cloud:

  • Scheduled tasks run at times you set. Many chat apps let you ask for something like an industry news digest every morning or a sales summary every Friday. Each run is a new piece of work, and each one counts toward your limit.
  • Always-on agents work toward a goal you give them, for hours or days, like following up on unpaid invoices. They check back with you when they need a decision. They run on the company’s computers and stay connected to your apps, so closing the app or turning off your computer doesn’t stop them.

Here’s what that looks like over a lunch break:

00:00 Agents That Keep Working When You Leave.

00:03 Most chat conversations stop when you stop typing. But some AI work keeps going after you walk away. It keeps using your usage limit while it runs. It can also keep acting in your apps, like sending messages or changing files.

00:18 Two kinds of work carry on without you, and both usually run in the cloud. The first is scheduled tasks. They run at times you set. Many chat apps let you ask for an industry news digest every morning, or a sales summary every Friday.

00:33 Each run is a new piece of work, and each one counts toward your limit. The second is always-on agents. They work toward a goal you give them, for hours or days, like following up on unpaid invoices.

00:45 They check back with you when they need a decision. They run on the company’s computers and stay connected to your apps. So closing the app, or turning off your computer, doesn’t stop them.

00:56 Here’s what that means in practice. You close your laptop and head out. On the company’s computers, the morning digest still runs at seven. The invoice agent sends another follow-up as you.

01:08 And the usage meter keeps climbing, while nobody is watching.

01:13 Here’s the same idea over a lunch break. A scheduled task runs at the times you set, whether you’re there or not. An always-on agent keeps working toward its goal the whole time.

01:24 A long task running on the company’s computers can also keep going after you close the window, until it finishes. That includes any subagents it started.

01:34 Work you can’t see is easy to forget about. A few habits keep it under control. First, check in regularly. Most apps keep a list of scheduled tasks, and a history of what an always-on agent did, and when.

01:46 Look through it the way you’d skim a colleague’s notes. Second, review what it did. Look at anything it sent, changed, or bought in your name. Those changes stick.

01:58 Third, pause or delete what you don’t need. A scheduled task you forgot about keeps running every day. Turn off tasks you no longer read. And pause an always-on agent while you’re out of the office, or when its job is done.

02:12 Fourth, know where the off switch is. Before you set up an always-on agent, find out how to pause it, and how to disconnect it from your apps. It’s much easier to look this up before you need it.

02:24 Below this video, there’s a practice app. You’re out of the office for two weeks, starting tomorrow. Find what will keep running while you’re away, and decide what should.
