Pressing send on a message to a stranger can feel like jumping into a cold lake. In this mentor session, you get to dip a toe in first. Mentor AI plays the person on the other end of your message and responds the way a real, busy person might, whether that’s a yes, a lukewarm “thanks,” or nothing at all.
The session takes about twenty-five minutes. Have your career profile card ready, along with companies.md and any drafts in outreach.md. If you haven’t drafted anything yet, that’s fine. You can rehearse with a sample candidate’s messages first.
Here’s what to expect:
- You’ll warm up with someone else’s message. You’ll read a sample candidate’s draft, predict where the recipient will stop reading, and rewrite it.
- Then you’ll rehearse your own messages in two rounds. You pick the recipients, such as a former colleague you’ve lost touch with, an engineer at a target company, a meetup speaker, or a recruiter whose message you’re replying to.
- Before each reply, you’ll predict what will happen and then see whether you were right.
- Each round ends with a follow-up or a short conversation. If there’s silence, you’ll write your one follow-up. If the recipient agrees to a chat, you’ll practice a few minutes of it.
The recipient stays in character until the debrief. At any point, type hint for a nudge, pause to step out and ask a coaching question, or wrap up to skip straight to your feedback. The debrief tells you how each message landed and why.
