The Stranger Test

You’ve written your positioning statement, and it makes perfect sense to you. Of course it does—you know the whole story behind every word! The real question is what a stranger takes away from it on a first read.

This session closes the Know Your Story section by testing everything you’ve built so far. It takes about thirty-five minutes and has four steps:

  1. The stranger test: Mentor AI reads your positioning statement as a recruiter who knows nothing about you and explains what it understood. Before it does, you predict what it’ll say.
  2. The bank check: You check that every claim in your statement points to a story in your bank and that your stories cover the top rows of your requirements map.
  3. The interview test: Mentor AI picks stories from your bank at random and asks the follow-up questions an interviewer would.
  4. A new posting: You get a job posting for your target role—one you haven’t seen before. You pick the three stories you’d lead with and explain how your statement would shift.

Get a few things ready to paste. You’ll need your career profile card, requirements_map.md with its translation table, story_bank.md, and positioning.md. The session works best with four or more stories in your bank. If you’re not there yet, you can still run the stranger test on its own and come back for the rest later.

Mentor AI won’t rewrite your statement or your stories. It tells you what a reader would conclude and asks questions. You make the changes.
