GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant from GitHub that suggests code inline as you type, answers questions about your project through Copilot Chat, and can take on whole tasks as an autonomous agent.

For Python work, Copilot plugs into Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs such as PyCharm, Neovim, Vim, Eclipse, and Xcode. It drafts a function body from a signature or docstring, sketches pytest cases, and explains unfamiliar modules without leaving the editor.

Paid plans let you pick a model from several providers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, while the free tier picks one for you. The Copilot cloud agent goes further: given an issue or a prompt from the agents panel, it runs in a GitHub Actions environment, opens a branch, edits files, runs your tests, and posts a pull request for you to review. Custom instructions and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers extend what it can reach.

GitHub offers a limited free tier alongside the paid Pro, Pro+, and Max plans for individuals and the Business and Enterprise plans for organizations. The same subscription covers other Copilot surfaces, including Copilot CLI in the terminal and Copilot code review on pull requests.
